If you ever been in the unfortunate position of having your prized engagement ring stuck on your finger, you know all too well how uncomfortable it can be.

At Holloway we’ve seen plenty of cases of engagement rings stuck on swollen fingers - especially during the warmer months - and it hurts me to say, we’ve even had to saw some off in the past. However, before you come in asking us to perform such a procedure (even though we can easily fix your ring once we’ve removed it), here are a few more delicate methods for your consideration.

Shine on You Crazy Coloured Diamonds

When most of us think of diamonds, we tend to think of a pure and colourless stone with no hue. But the truth is, diamonds come in a wide and diverse range of colours.

The vast majority of diamonds are not pure, colourless stones, but are in fact gems with tints of yellow or brown. Typically, the term “diamond colour” actually refers to an absence of colour, as a lack of colour is one of the four main criteria used to assess a diamond’s overall quality.

The History of the Diamond Engagement Ring: A Timeline

Today, in western civilisation, diamond rings are synonymous with betrothal. However, the diamond engagement ring, as we know it today, is a relatively new custom.

Although diamonds were used as ring ornamentation for many centuries, most experts date the origin of the diamond engagement ring to the late 15th century. The man credited with starting this romantic tradition is a little known Archduke from Austria, who in actual fact presented his betrothed with a specially crafted diamond ring without any sense of amorous affection whatsoever.

Fighting Against Blood Diamonds

In the late 1990s the Sierra Leone and Angola civil wars put the issue of conflict diamonds at the forefront of global consciousness. The broader jewellery industry was unfairly demonised as contributing to these conflicts, but nonetheless, the industry as a collective took a firm stand against conflict diamonds by passing a resolution that changed the diamond trade forever.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was the first ever proposed by an industry body and was passed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003. This significant, game-changing resolution brought industry, governments and civil society together to crack down on the illegal conflict diamond trade, responsible for funding civil conflicts in the developing world.

Diamonds: The Journey From Mine to Ring

From its formation hundreds of kilometres below the earth’s surface to its brilliant metamorphosis into someone’s cherished engagement ring, the journey of a diamond from mine to ring can take up to 3.3 billion years.

A diamond starts to form when carbon below the earth’s surface grows in kimberlite rock as eight-sided crystals. The extreme heat and pressure placed on the these carbon crystals forms very tight atomic bonds within the crystal, giving the diamond its hardness.

Powerful volcanic activity then pushes the kimberlite and diamond towards the earth’s surface and are mined down the volcanic pipe - the primary sources of the world's diamond mines.

How to Take Care of Your Diamond Ring

At the Holloway workshop we use a professionally developed ultrasonic cleaning machine to keep our customers’ diamond rings looking brilliant. This machine uses high frequency sound waves, combined with our very own specially developed cleaning detergent, to bring sparkle to even the most neglected diamonds.

Most professionals would advise gem owners use such a device for cleaning their rings, but for those looking for a safe and considered home remedy we thought we’d provide you with a few pointers. Too many times we've seen people get it wrong; and while diamonds are resilient you should look to have them properly cleaned on a regular basis.
