What to Know Before You Buy Diamond Earrings

If you’re buying diamond earrings online or coming into a showroom for the first time, here’s what we’d tell a friend:

• Cut is the one that matters most. The way a diamond is proportioned and faceted determines how much light it bounces back to your eye. A well-cut half-carat will outsparkle a poorly-cut one-carat every single time. This is the one thing most jewellers don’t talk about because sourcing well-cut stones takes more effort and means turning down a lot of diamonds.
• Carat size is not the same as sparkle. Bigger isn’t automatically better. At Holloway, we’d always rather put you in a smaller stone with an ideal cut than a larger stone that doesn’t perform. We’ll show you the difference side by side so you can see it for yourself.
• The setting matters, too. A four-claw setting lets in the most light. A bezel setting protects the stone and looks cleaner and more contemporary. A halo setting makes the centre stone look bigger.
• Ask questions. That’s what our team is there for. We won’t steer you toward the most expensive option, but the right one. Come in and tell us the occasion, the budget, and a bit about the person. We’ll take it from there.
