How to take care of white gold, yellow gold or rose gold rings?

So, you’ve got yourself a stunning new diamond ring – whether it’s white, yellow or rose gold, it’s a treasure to behold. But like all treasures, it requires a little TLC to keep it sparkling and pristine. Let’s dive into the intricate world of gold ring care and uncover the secrets to maintaining its beauty for years to come.

White gold:

Let’s start with white gold – that shimmering beauty that exudes elegance and sophistication. But did you know that 18 karat white gold isn’t actually white? It’s 75% pure gold, which has a natural orange hue. The whiteness is achieved by blending it with 25% precious white metals. However, this concoction results in a grey or yellowish tint, yellow if cheap and nasty nickel is thrown into the mix. That’s why most white gold jewels are rhodium plated – a thin, super shiny white coating that masks any imperfections and enhances its brilliance.

But here’s the catch – polishing and rhodium plating should be done sparingly, as too much polishing can eventually wear away your precious jewellery. We recommend re-rhodium plating every couple of years to keep your white gold ring looking its best.

But what about yellow and rose gold?

Yellow gold:

Ah, the warm glow of yellow gold – a classic choice for timeless elegance. 18 karat gold, with its perfect blend of gold, silver, and copper, is the gold standard for rings. But beware of lower karat golds like 10K or 9K – they may be easy on the wallet, but they’re paler colour is not suitable for diamond rings unless you’re on a tight budget.

Rose gold:

And let’s not forget about rose gold – that romantic blush of pink that’s oh-so-chic. With its higher copper content and less silver, rose gold offers a unique and modern twist on traditional gold.

Maintenance of your rings:

Now, let’s talk about maintenance. Regardless of the gold colour, white, yellow or rose, your diamond ring deserves a little pampering every now and then. We recommend taking it for a professional clean every few months to ensure it sparkles like new. Our workshops use state-of-the-art ultrasonic cleaning machines with a hot proprietary ammonia and detergent solution. These machines work their magic with high-frequency sound waves, shaking and vibrating away any dirt and grime. Following the shakeup we use an industrial steam cleaner and for any remaining stubborn spots, a scrub with a stiff toothbrush does the trick.

Important numbers:

22 karat gold is 91.6% gold and also too soft to be practical.

14 karat gold is 58.5% gold and is a little less costly and very tough, but not quite as yellow as 18K.

Lower karat golds such as 10K (41.6%) and 9K (37.5%), are corner cutting for diamond rings unless you are on a very tight budget.

Very important note:

Remember, 18K gold should never be worn next to platinum, silver, or lower carat golds, as they wear away the 18K gold, whether it is white, yellow or rose gold. We’ve seen many of those over the decades. A 9K spacer is worn between two rings to separate them causing thousand of dollars of remaking new rings.

In the end, caring for your gold ring is a delicate dance of maintenance and preservation. From regular cleanings to occasional re-plating, a little effort goes a long way in keeping your precious jewellery looking its best. So, treat your ring with the love and attention it deserves, and it will reward you with a lifetime of beauty and brilliance.
